MENTORING IN KENYA

In December 2008, we will partner with Emerging Humanity in Kisumu, Kenya. Look for updates on this site, as we work with the youth of this organization to create a memorable and meaningful volunteer and travel experience that will help the people of Kisumu continue to build a sustainable community for themselves. Trips will be made in multiple teams of six people and include post-service opportunities for wildlife safaris with a reputable travel firm.

The Hawai`i connection is Bart Abbott, President of Emerging Humanity. He is a University of Hawai`i graduate and a former Hawai`i delegate to the Scotland World Youth Congress.

“Last year, Emerge purchased one acre of farm land along the outskirts of the city. Since then, our Kenya Representative, James Oindo, has developed the land into a working farm that is providing food and wages to more than 13 formerly homeless young people. Three of those young people are working on the farm full time. ..The farm is producing an indigenous form of kale, known as sukumu wiki, which has become a local favorite among the women who are mothers in the area. They purchase the kale which provides money for the young people who work the land. Maize, watermelon, tomatoes, and cilantro are also being grown, and several species of grafted fruit trees have been planted as well…As Emerging Humanity becomes more established in the city of Kisumu, we are being presented with more and more opportunities to do projects that help young people live safer, healthier lives. “ – Bart Abbott.
