The inspiration for Travel & Learn springs from my desire to bring all the elements of the things I love to do together and to share
those experiences with others. The “what I love” is travel, teaching and learning and making a positive difference in the lives of people.
One magic ingredient I have found is to make sure that the generations are working together; especially the elders with children and youth.
The intergenerational “spin” is a key ingredient in the study tours designed by Travel & Learn. The second is the collaborative nature in
the way the tours are organized.
Our flagship program has been the Ohana English Preschool (OEP) project called Elder/Kids Play club in Yokohama, Japan. This program is
entering its third year and has successfully recruited older American adults to teach English to preschool children. The program will
expand to other preschools in Japan in 2008.
As we launch, I invite individuals to join me in pilot efforts in Japan, India, and Kenya. This will be an exploration in possibilities.
Those interested should bring a notepad, an analytical mind and a sense of adventure as we look at how to create study tours with our youth
led non-profit partners. Come prepared to work.
As a grandparent I want to explore the world of grandparent/grandchild travel. We are creating a site to share experiences and to find
the keys to making these trips, not only fun, but an opportunity for generations to learn together.
With best regards, Mae Mendelson
